Saarioinen’s Valkeakoski factory has commissioned the world’s first 20 MWh high-temperature Elstor thermal energy storage system for steam production. The new system replaces natural gas in steam production — placing Saarioinen among global pioneers.
This is Elstor’s sixth commercial commissioning. It is likely the world’s largest total installed base of operational high-temperature thermal storage systems from a single supplier.
A sustainability action reflected in the numbers
Saarioinen is one of Finland’s best-known food manufacturers, with responsibility and sustainable food solutions at the core of its operations. The commissioning of Elstor’s thermal energy storage system directly supports these goals.
A single 20 MWh thermal storage system produces approximately 10,000 MWh of steam energy per year — an amount equivalent to the annual heating demand of around 1,000 detached houses. Direct carbon dioxide emissions are estimated to decrease by more than 2,300 tonnes of CO₂ annually, corresponding to the annual emissions of approximately 1,450 combustion-engine cars.
In its power class, this 20 MWh storage system ranks among the world’s leading solutions: 3.2 MW charging capacity, 4.0 MW discharge capacity, and an exceptionally high discharge power-to-storage capacity ratio.

Finnish pioneering spirit in a global transition
High-temperature thermal storage systems capable of replacing gas, oil, and other fuels in steam production are only just emerging on the market. In terms of the number of commissioned systems and commercially agreed deliveries, Elstor has risen to the forefront of its field — possibly even becoming the global leader.
We are extremely proud of this, even though we are still only at the beginning of our journey. Elstor was founded with one goal: to create a significant climate impact through the technology we have developed — without increasing costs for our customers. This project is exactly that kind of breakthrough.
