Clewor Oy has commissioned an Elstor Power-to-Heat energy storage system, replacing light fuel oil in the company’s steam production.

For industrial companies, phasing out fossil fuels means addressing both emissions and energy costs. Clewor Oy’s new Elstor energy storage system brings these objectives together: it uses emission-free electricity to produce steam and stores electrical energy as heat. This allows electricity to be purchased during low-price hours and the stored energy to be used according to customer demand, including when electricity prices are at their highest. Installed in 2026, the system has a storage capacity of 5 MWh and is expected to reduce annual emissions by approximately 500 tonnes.

From light fuel oil to renewable electricity

Clewor Oy previously used light fuel oil to produce steam. With the commissioning of the Elstor system, the company has transitioned to electric, emission-free steam production. This also eliminates the local carbon dioxide and particulate emissions previously generated by burning oil for steam production.

The system installed at Clewor Oy is Elstor Oy’s standard unit, with a storage capacity of 5 MWh. The investment has enabled the company to achieve emission-free steam production, with estimated annual emissions reductions of approximately 500 tonnes.

Lower-cost electricity, steam on demand

The financial viability of electrification depends in part on when electricity is purchased. Production schedules do not always align with the lowest electricity prices.

Elstor Oy’s solution allows electricity consumption and steam production to be scheduled independently. The system converts electricity into heat during low-price hours and stores that thermal energy for later use. The stored heat is then used to generate steam according to Clewor Oy’s production needs.

This enables Clewor Oy to benefit from lower-cost electricity even when market prices are higher. The thermal energy storage system helps the company manage the impact of electricity price fluctuations while also replacing fossil fuel use.

A practical example of industrial electrification

Clewor Oy’s investment demonstrates how energy storage supports the transition from oil-fired to electric steam production. Combining renewable electricity with thermal energy storage addresses key objectives for industrial energy investments: reducing emissions and taking advantage of electricity price fluctuations to achieve cost savings.

We thank Clewor Oy for their trust and collaboration.
