Two Finnish food industry customers are transitioning to emission-free, combustion-free thermal energy production using patented technology developed in Lappeenranta.
Elstor Oy, a new energy technology company based in Skinnarila, Lappeenranta, near LUT University, has this week signed two significant delivery contracts.
Both end customers are Finnish food companies aiming to implement their steam production processes without carbon dioxide emissions in a cost-effective manner. Each delivery includes one 20 MWh high-temperature thermal energy storage system, which stores electricity in the form of heat and releases the stored thermal energy into the process as steam at the desired time, temperature, and pressure. The delivered systems include fully automated, remotely monitored equipment.
The combined emissions reduction of these two deliveries, to be delivered during 2026, is approximately 5,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year compared to fossil fuels. This corresponds to the annual driving emissions of approximately 2,850 internal combustion engine passenger cars.*
*Estimate based on approximately 15,000 km of annual driving and CO₂ emissions of 117 g/km.
